SPANISH REVIVAL-STYLE COURTYARD BY MARRIOTT SAN DIEGO MIRAMAR
COMPLETES TRANSFORMATION IN TIME FOR SUMMER TRAVEL

Renovated and Rebranded Hotel Welcomes Business, Military, and Leisure Travelers with
Stylish Design and Modern Amenities to Enhance Their San Diego Experience
May 11, 2022 – San Diego, CA – With its distinctive Spanish Revival-inspired style paired with contemporary guestrooms and common areas, the Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Miramar recently opened its doors after an extensive renovation and rebranding. The re-envisioned hotel, formerly a Holiday Inn, was rebranded as a Courtyard by Marriott with the brand’s latest Generation 6.5 design standards that today’s travelers enjoy. Hallmarks of the design include a collaborative lobby lounge, natural light and connections to the outdoors, and tech-enhanced guest rooms.
“We’re thrilled to welcome travelers — as well as the local community — to our new hotel,” says General Manager Marijo Bien Fabian. “Whether they are staying at the hotel, enjoying drinks at The Bistro, or attending an event, we hope our guests enjoy this beautifully designed property and our Southern California hospitality.”
A convenient locale from which to do business or enjoy San Diego’s famous attractions, the hotel is just minutes from MCAS Miramar Base, UC San Diego, the charming seaside village of La Jolla, Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, and Torrey Pines Golf Course. Historic Old Town San Diego, San Diego Zoo, and SeaWorld San Diego are within a short drive.

Design Inspired by Local Architectural and Military Heritage
For the hotel’s exterior, architect Margit E. Whitlock, AIA, Architectural Concepts, Inc., drew inspiration from the Spanish Revival style of architect Irving J. Gill. Characterized by white walls, arches, and red clay-tiled roofs, the style is prevalent in the buildings he designed in the early 1900s in the Balboa Park, La Jolla, and other historic areas of San Diego.
The Courtyard’s exterior reflects this iconic look with its arching colonnades, brilliant white exterior, and tiled roof. “A cornice was added to the top of the building’s main tower to add detail and definition,” Whitlock says. “The color change transformed the hotel’s appearance, with bright white walls accented by dark and medium gray trim along the rooflines. A new fountain in front of the hotel adds to the Mediterranean ambiance.”
Custom Spanish-influenced exterior and interior sconces “are like jewelry,” says the project’s interior designer, Shannon Miller-Rice, President of Payte Miller Interiors, Inc. “Additional elements were selected so that the design flows from the exterior to the interior. The marble-covered elevator surround was fitted with an intricate overlaid bronze pattern that wraps the wall.”
The interior also features touches that pay tribute to the area’s military heritage and the nearby MCAS Miramar Base. “We wanted to celebrate the Marines,” says Miller-Rice. ”Many of the hotel’s guests are serving in the military or are contractors. Artwork was created with this in mind.” An abstract mural in The Bistro depicts the propeller of a fighter plane, and an accent wall in the fitness center displays planes flying in formation. MCAS Miramar is the site of a popular annual air show in September which attracts guests to the area.
The Spanish Revival theme extends into the outdoor pool area, which incorporates custom decorative tile work in a gray and blue vintage Spanish motif. In keeping with the brand standards, the renovated pool area features a fire pit, perfect for enjoying in Southern California’s pleasant year-round climate.
Spaces to Unwind and Collaborate in Comfort
The state-of-the-art lobby provides flexible spaces to gather, with The Bistro at the center of it all. Here guests may gather over breakfast, drinks, or dinner. In addition, The Crate offers a self-service kiosk where guests can brew fresh Starbucks coffee and purchase snacks at any time.
The fitness center, outdoor pool, and whirlpool help guests stay refreshed and energized. The 24-hour fitness center features elliptical machines, exercise bikes, treadmills, free weights, and strength-training equipment.
The hotel’s flexible event space includes the inviting Miramar Ballroom, which can accommodate up to 80 guests. And for smaller events, the Boardroom is ideal for up to 12 guests. The hotel offers innovative event menus, AV equipment, and complimentary high-speed Internet access throughout the event venues.
Guest rooms feature the Courtyard brand’s latest generation of design and amenities, including: plush bedding, spa-like showers and premium bath amenities, flexible workspaces with ergonomic chairs, 55-inch flat-screen TVs, and complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi. In addition to the spacious standard rooms, there are 15 suites with king-sized beds, living areas, microwaves, refrigerators and toasters.
